Quick answer
HVAC financing lets you replace a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump now and pay over time. Common options are contractor financing, an unsecured personal loan, and a home equity loan or HELOC. Compare APR and total cost, watch for deferred-interest promos, and ask your utility about rebates first.
When the heat or air goes out, you often need to decide fast. A few minutes comparing financing can still save hundreds of dollars.
Before you finance
- Get two or three quotes. Ask each installer for the equipment model, efficiency rating, labor, permits and warranty.
- Ask whether repair is an option. A repair may buy you time to save.
- Check for rebates. Utilities often offer rebates on efficient systems. The ENERGY STAR rebate finder is a good place to start.
Financing options
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Contractor financing | Convenient, sometimes 0% promos | Deferred-interest traps, limited to that installer |
| Personal loan | Fixed rate and payment, shop any installer | APR depends on credit |
| Home equity loan or HELOC | Often lower rates | Home is collateral, closing costs, slower |
| Credit card | Fast | High APR if not paid quickly |
What it costs
Here is what borrowing $8,000 over 60 months costs at three APRs across the 5.99% to 35.99% range offered on our network.
| APR | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total repaid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.99% | $154.63 | about $1,278 | about $9,278 |
| 15.99% | $194.50 | about $3,670 | about $11,670 |
| 35.99% | $289.01 | about $9,341 | about $17,341 |
Read contractor promos closely
Many HVAC offers advertise "no interest if paid in full." The CFPB explains that this is usually deferred interest: if any balance remains at the end, you can owe the interest back to the original purchase date. A true 0% APR loan is different, so ask which one you are getting.
Questions to ask any lender
- What is the APR, and is it fixed?
- Is there an origination fee or a prepayment penalty?
- What is the total I will repay?
- Is the promo deferred interest or true 0%?
For other home projects, see home improvement loans. If the system failed without warning and you need money quickly, read emergency loans.

Examples are illustrations, not offers. Approval, APR and terms depend on the lender, your state and your credit profile.
Frequently asked questions about hvac financing: how to pay for a new ac or furnace
What is the best way to finance a new HVAC system?
Compare contractor financing with a personal loan using APR and total cost. A true 0% offer you can pay off in time is hard to beat. Otherwise, the lowest APR with a payment you can afford wins.
Can I finance HVAC with bad credit?
Some lenders and contractors work with lower scores, at higher APRs. Compare the total cost, and consider repairing rather than replacing if the system has life left.
How long are HVAC loans?
Personal loans commonly run a few years. Longer terms lower the payment but raise total interest. Contractor programs vary, so ask for the term in writing.
Are there rebates for efficient HVAC systems?
Many utilities and some government programs offer rebates or credits for efficient equipment. Ask your utility and installer before you buy.
