Quick answer
Rolling over a payday loan means paying a fee to push back the due date. The fee does not reduce what you owe, according to the CFPB. Borrow $300 and roll over once, and you pay $90 in fees and still owe $300. Many states limit or ban rollovers, and some require lenders to offer an extended repayment plan instead.
A rollover feels like a lifeline on the due date. In practice, it is a new fee for the same debt.
How a rollover works
The CFPB example: you borrow $300 and owe $345 in 14 days. If you roll it over and pay only the $45 fee, you owe $300 plus another $45 fourteen days later.
| Rollovers | Fees paid so far | Still owed |
|---|---|---|
| 0 (repaid on time) | $45 | $0 |
| 1 | $90 | $345 |
| 2 | $135 | $345 |
| 4 | $225 | $345 |
| 6 | $315 | $345 |
Illustration extending the CFPB's $300 loan with a $45 fee per two-week period. After six rollovers you have paid more in fees than you borrowed and still owe the full amount.
Why rollovers are so common
CFPB research published in 2016 found more than 80% of payday loans were rolled over or reborrowed within 30 days, and payday borrowers ended up in default 20% of the time.
Better options on the due date
- Ask for an extended repayment plan. The CFPB says some states require lenders to offer one, and it may be free depending on state law.
- Pay something toward principal if the lender allows partial payments.
- Replace the loan with lower-cost credit, such as a credit union payday alternative loan, which by rule cannot be rolled over.
- Consolidate several payday loans. See payday loan consolidation.
- Get help. See payday loan relief and assistance.

Payday, cash advance and title products are high-cost short-term credit. They are intended for short-term needs only and are not a long-term solution. This page does not match you for payday loans. Rates and examples are illustrations; a lender's written disclosure shows your actual terms, and approval is never guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions about payday loan rollovers: how renewals multiply the cost
Does paying the fee reduce my payday loan balance?
No. The CFPB says renewing by paying just the fees does not reduce the principal you owe.
How many times can I roll over a payday loan?
It depends on your state. Many states limit or ban rollovers. Federal credit union PALs cannot be rolled over at all.
What is the difference between a rollover and an extended repayment plan?
A rollover delays the whole balance for another fee. An extended repayment plan lets you pay the balance in smaller installments over a longer time, sometimes without extra fees depending on state law.
How common are rollovers?
CFPB research published in 2016 found that more than 80% of payday loans were rolled over or reborrowed within 30 days.
